Benefits of Probiotics

I often get asked by patients, what are the benefits of probiotics and when do we need them.

My own opinion is that if we are well and have a healthy diet with adequate fruits and vegetables, we do not need probiotics, but if we are having medical problems that may need probiotic support then there is a need to add it.

So, when do we need it?

  1. If you are suffering from antibiotics associated diarrhea.
rhamnosus and S. boulardii have been cited in studies that have reduced the of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
  2. If you are suffering from allergy
In a recent study of breast-fed infants suffering from atopic eczema B. lactis and L. rhamnosus GG were found to be effective in decreasing the eczema severity.
  3. To improve immune heath
Some probiotics have been shown to promote the production of natural antibodies in the body. They may also boost immune cells like the IgA-producing cells, T lymphocytes and natural killer cells which are needed for an optimum immune function.
  4.  Helps alleviate gut symptoms
There are some studies that have shown that probiotics containing L plantarum and B breve have had beneficial effects in IBS.
